Mr Tan took up an endowment policy with NTUC Income in 1996. Under this policy, Mr Tan will receive a payout if he becomes
permanently and totally disabled or if he passes away. In 1999, Mr Tan was diagnosed with lung cancer. Within the next few years,
his cancer cells had spread to other parts of his body. This placed a huge financial strain on his family. His family filed a permanent and total disability (PTD) claim with NTUC Income in 2004.
At this point of time, Mr Tan's cancer had advanced into the terminal stage. The 5-year survival rate for patients with advanced lung cancer is very low, at less than 2%. Mr Tan has been classified as terminally ill. This means that there is a high possibility that he will not survive beyond a period of 12 months. Normally, PTD claims are paid out in 5 yearly installments.
However, in Mr Tan's case, NTUC Income made an exception and paid out the claim in a lump sum. We hope this money will help
Mr Tan spend his remaining days in comfort, and provide some form of relief to his family members who are struggling over the medical expenses incurred.
