Mr Lim (not his real name) was a policyholder with NTUC Income since 1992. In 2003, at
the age of 52, he was devastated to realise that he had been diagnosed of end stage liver
disease. He underwent a liver transplant and submitted a claim under his Living policy.
The medical report showed that Mr Lim had longstanding Hepatitis B known for 30 years time.
This condition was not declared when Mr Lim signed up for insurance with us in 1992. Under
an insurance contract, if a material fact was not made known to the insurer at the time of
proposal, the policy issued could be rendered void.
However, instead of rejecting this claim, we decided to take a compassionate stand. We
understand that Mr Lim will have an enormous bill to settle due to his liver transplant. He
would also require numerous follow-up sessions with his doctor in the future. As such, we
decided to settle Mr Lim's claim at a reduced amount.
When Mr Lim received our ex-gratia offer, he wrote in and expressed his heartfelt gratitude.
He never expected that Hepatitis B can be so devastating. We know that the money will never be
able to compensate Mr Lim for the pain he has to go through but we certainly hope that this money
will go some way in easing his financial burden.
