A pre-university student, Lee Seng Hin (not his real name), was sent
for an adventure course by his school's ECA (extra-curricular activity)
club. As part of the training, he had to traverse an obstacle course
raised about 2 storeys above ground, designed to build participants'
confidence. While partway through, he fell and landed awkwardly despite
having on a safety belt.
Seng Hin was sent to hospital where it was found that he had fractured
his spine and could not move his limbs. He stayed in hospital for 10
months where, after therapy, he was able to move his arms but the lower
portion of his body remained paralysed. His school had encouraged all
its students to take up a personal accident policy with Income, and a
sum of $20,000.00 was paid to him for the total permanent disablement.
Seng Hin has managed to pick himself up after the unfortunate incident
and has now gone back to school to continue with his studies.
